JOURNALISM

Course Requirement:
Grades 9-12

Prerequisite:
"B" grade average in English and writing ability, and/or consent of English instructor.

Length:
Year/semester class that can be repeated.

Course content:  Journalism is open to any grade level, but requires written permission from the instructor for freshmen and sophomores.  The class begins with the study of a newspaper's parts and processes.  By second quarter the student is regularly publishing, editing, working layouts, typing, and headlining.  The class spends time researching and discussing current topics from national level down to the scholastic.

LEADERSHIP (Student Body Association, ASB)

Course Requirement:
Grades 9-12

Prerequisite:
Mandatory enrollment for student body officers, class officers, or permission of instructor.

Length:
Year/semester class

Course content:  Students will learn basic leadership skills of oral and written communication, debate, group dynamics, time management, development of ideas, and evaluation.  Students will learn the democratic process of government by participating in and developing an understanding of a constitution, parliamentary procedure, budget, expenditure of funds, and their roles as student body officers.  Students will learn how to plan and organize student activities.  Student participation and involvement are of prime interest.

Prerequisite:
Approval by the library media specialist through application.

Length:
Year/semester class

Course content:  Aides assist the media center staff in handling circulation of books, and audiovisual materials.   Students learn how to use the media center effectively and how to assist others in locating materials.  Each aide is assigned several rows of bookshelves to keep in order.  All share in keeping the media center running smoothly.  Duties include the following: housekeeping duties such as straightening chairs and dusting shelves; check in books from book drops (check accession number); check in magazines from the book drop; hang up newspapers; deliver overdue notices; circulation desk (primary duty); check out books to faculty and students; shelve carded books; assist in the mending of books; help students and faculty locate books, magazines, and other materials; assist students using microfiche and microfiche readers; some typing duties may be included.  "Pass" or "fail" grades are determined by the efficiency and reliability of student performance.

Course content:  Students will work in the computer center one period per day.  Responsibilities include maintenance of the computer equipment in the center, cataloging and filing new computer software, operating computing equipment to accomplish teacher-assigned tasks, and general duties as required by the computer center director.  Application for these positions must be made to the counselor.  "Pass" or "fail" grades are determined by the efficiency and reliability of student performance.

Grades 11-12 and office staff approval required.

Length:
Year/semester class

Course content:  Students will work in the school office one period each day.  Instruction will be given in regard to attitudes and procedures necessary to perform the duties of the job.  This is a work experience type opportunity.  The tasks are varied and provide experience for a typical office position.

STUDENT AIDE - OFFICE COPIER AIDE**

Prerequisite:
Grades 10-12, and office staff approval

Length:
Year/semester class

Course content:  Students work in the copy room of the office one period per day.  Instruction is given in regard to attitudes and operation of copier equipment.  Student may also offer relief in the office as an office aide, if needed.

STUDENT TUTOR **

Prerequisite:
Grades 11-12, consent of counselor and elementary staff approval.  Parent permission form required.

Length:
Year/semester class

Course content:  The student tutor is involved in a cross-age tutoring program, which involves students at Mill Street, Fairview, and C.K. Price School.  Emphasis is placed on responsibility for the tutor to be on time to his/her assignment, help younger students on an individual basis, assist the supervising teacher with projects in the classroom, and arrange own transportation to and from the elementary school.

TEACHER ASSISTANT (T.A.) **

Prerequisite:
Grades 11-12 and staff approval required.

Length:
Year/semester class

Course content:  A limited number of opportunities are available in classrooms for students to work with and assist high school faculty members in specialized teaching areas.  Applications for these positions are to be made with your counselor and require the principal's written approval to the counselor.  Individual departments establish prerequisites.

** Only one of these courses per semester per student.   "Pass" or "fail" grades are given in classes.

**Students cannot pre-register for these courses.  Teacher permission during the first week of school is required prior to enrollment.
